Learning Observed

Neha, Willie, Helen & Daniel had a blast conducting Operation Big Science in Week 7.  Thanks to the New World kit of ingredients.  Lots of learning resources as well about the Types of Mixtures and Chemical Reactions in Baking.  The learners learned that cooking is scientific fun and that the science capabilities are for life.  After initially watching a short video explaining the difference between chemical and physical changes the learners were challenged to explore their curiosity by examining their materials and to discuss their priori knowledge about the materials and cooking with them.  They had tonic water, water and different kinds of jelly.  Then they collaboratively devised an experiment - a cooking experiment, using the ingredients they selected.  First they identified a question and then a hypothesis- making connections to their prior knowledge.  As a group they needed to plan their method too.  During the cooking they made observations- noting what they notice, think and wonder.  Neha did well leading the group through their experiment and capturing photo and video evidence of their process. She also developed some capability at measuring while completing their recipe.  Their concoction was a mystery- they wanted to see if it would glow in the black light, it didn’t so they left it to set and check the next day.  Such a collaboration!

Neha's Speech Learning Story

Learning Observed

This term all learners in LH1 wrote a speech on a topic of their choosing.  Oral language is an important skill and Neha refined her knowledge of some language features to enhance both the speaking and writing of her oral presentation.  Neha learned about emotive language features such as the use of adjectives; persuasive features such as rhetorical questions, repetition, quotations, statistics, contrasts and lists of three ; and varied sentence structures like statements, questions, exclamations and commands.  She learned about the structure of a speech including introductions, endings, sequencing words and and how to make her point clear.  Neha also explored how to creatively add additional details to make the argument stronger.  This was based around the ‘hamburger method’ of speech writing.  I was so impressed with how Neha used humour and persuasive techniques to convince the audience why kids should learn to play an instrument.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

Neha cultivated the curiosity of others with her speech on Why kids should play a musical instrument- she made everyone wonder why they weren’t a musician!  She connected with her audience using emotive language and confident delivery - in her hapu group and at the school competition. She collaborated with other learners while practicing her speech and responded to feedback and lead the discussion, writing and providing of feedback and feed forward to the other learners when they did their speech or poem.  Her public speaking capability has grown as a result of this experience. We were very proud of Neha representing us - the Pukekos!- at the Speech Finals- she is a real asset to our OrmPS whanau.  Ka Pai!

My Day at Google Apps For Education

On Wednesday 12 August,I went to GAFE which means Google Apps For Education.When I got to school,I saw all the learning coaches come. I went with many people.It was a long trip to Hobsonville Point Primary School.When we got there,we got a little bag filled books,pens and bagel bites! In the beginning, a man called Toby Carr talked about his life on how he became the founder of a company called Dex tech. So when I went to my first workshop,what I learnt is how to do animation on google slides.Then we went to eat for morning tea.After morning tea,the second workshop I went to a workshop where we learnt how to use green screen.We also learnt how to present in front of a camera and the Maori wave which was very fun.Then it was lunch time.After lunch I went the playground and I got across the playground without touching the ground!When we got inside,it was time to do third workshop.The workshop I went to was Aleena's,Jessica's and Kavisha's workshop.At their workshop I learnt about our learning pathways.To make it a bit fun they added a quiz on Kahoot about our learning pathways.Then I went to last workshop Google Cardboard which was a very fun workshop.Then at the end it was a prize draw.Only Angli got a prize.Then it was the end of GAFE and it turned out to be a very fun day.    

NYLD

Today we went to the Vodafone Center for NYLD (National Young Leaders Day). When we first arrived there, we didn't know where to go. But we found out we were in the front rows. The first speaker was William Pike. He talked about All Passion No Limits,being positive and his story. The second speaker was Mrs Rukumoana . She talked about If You Believe In Yourself,Anything Is Possible, it doesn't matter what you look like,you were born to stand out and her story. Then there was this game called egg roulette.There was one boy and one girl. The boy got two raw eggs in his face and the girl got three hard-boiled eggs int her face.The third speakers were Riley and Steve Hathaway.They talked about if your passionate about something do it and to inspire others to do the right thing.Then we had morning tea. The fourth speaker was Darryl Sabin.He talked about when Stuff Happens, giving everything your best and when you work hard,you can achieve anything. Then we played with these huge round balls, then did the Mexican wave.  The next speaker was Libby Christophers. She talked about how she wanted to save the Maui dolphin.Then we had lunch. There was also this speaker called Phoenix Pule'anga. He talked about making the most of every opportunity.Then Alex and Corban from The Block came and talked about that a leader should be kind,generous and hard working,you should know your strengths and weaknesses and don't care about what other people think of you.Then Alison Pugh said don't care about if you don't do what you need to do because no one will care.Last of all,Jamie McDell talked that you have to take every single chance and respect your opinions.Then she sang two songs called "Crash" and "Sunshine". And that was the end of National Young Leaders Day 2015.

LH1's Zoo Learning Adventure Blog Post

On Thursday 30 July, LH1 went on a trip to the zoo. When  we first got to the zoo, we split into three groups and in those three groups we split into another three groups. I was with Ashmira's dad. I saw flamingos,cheetahs and elephants at the end of the day and we studied about these animals.   I also saw meerkats,lorikeets and porcupines. I went in the meerkat tunnel,red pandas,keas.We also saw the takahes, blue ducks,zebras,giraffes,ostriches,wallabies,emus,seals, otters,penguins,hippopotamus,lions,baboons,orangutans, ring-tailed lemurs and kiwis.It was a great day at the zoo and it as so fun.I hope the school can go back to the zoo again.

Neha, Sadeen and Ashmira's Leadership Learning Story

Learning Area: iActive - Leadership

Learning Observed

Neha, Ashmira and Sadeen are the leaders of Group 2 during iActive time. I have noticed that this term these three learners have really stepped up their leadership skills. I can rely on them to lead the group in activities like Rob the Nest, Line Tag and the Collaboration Station. Neha, Ashmira and Sadeen communicate clearly and simply to everybody, making sure that the other learners understand before proceeding. They are always organised and will make sure that the Group 2 learners from LH1, LH2 and LH4 are organised too. Neha, Ashmira and Sadeen try their hardest to keep to our timeframe and ask questions about what is coming up next or how they could help more. They are a good example of leadership to other learners in our school and I hope they maintain this in the future.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

These three girls work collaboratively to set up, lead and pack up for the Group 2 iActive activities every day. The demonstrate that to be good leaders, people must work together for a common goal (Managing Self and Relating to Others). They have developed their capabilities in this area from the beginning of Term 2 until now (Term 3, Week 4) and I am sure this will continue to grow and improve.

Next Learning Steps

Demonstrate the same leadership during learning time in our Habitat and mentor other learners. Recruit younger learners within the group to help with small tasks e.g. counting the balls at the end of Rob the Nest.
