Yay, bright shirts!
Loud Shirt Day is a day when we fundraise money to give to deaf people so they can hear and learn how to talk. Last week, Friday 18 September was Loud Shirt Day at Ormiston Primary School. Nearly everyone at school was wearing a bright shirt. So every one enjoyed the day wearing colourful t-shirts. Why we celebrate Loud Shirt Day is that people fundraise money to give to the deaf so they can get bits of technology to help them hear and to help them talk. So this is my blog post about Loud Shirt Day.

Neha and Jessica's 3D Printing Learning Story
Learner: Jessica & Neha Learning Coach: T.Dillner Date: 21.9.15
|
Learning Area: Technology - 3D Printing
|
Learning Observed
|
Jessica and Neha chose to participate in 3D Printing during iExperience during Week 7-10 this term. We initially learnt about the Thinker’s Key called ‘BAR’. BAR stands for Bigger, Add, Replace. To practise, the learners had to pick either a pen, lunch box or tennis racquet to make a feature bigger, add to the item and replace something. The learners had as much creative license as they needed and then they reflected on how functional the item had become - could it still be used for its original purpose?
The next stage was to come up with an item that we use at school and repeat the BAR process. Jessica and Neha decided to make a new lunchbox with an added ice box and magnetised handle.
Jessica and Neha had to use the website TinkerCad to design their new and improved lunchbox. They had to use the pre-existing shapes and objects to form their 3D model which was then printed out by our LH1 3D printer.
After analysing their printed model, the girls were able to write a description about who would use it, why they designed it and what its features were. They also spent some time reflecting on improvements and redesigning it on TinkerCad to show these changes.

Jessica and Neha were collaborative during this process by sharing ideas and coming up with other ways to show creativity (Thinking, Participating & Contributing). They demonstrated curiosity by engaging with the entire technology process of designing, making, redesigning and evaluating. Jessica and Neha were connected as they were able to show their learning in three different mediums (paper, digital and printed model).

Trip to Hamilton
Trip To Hamilton
Last Sunday,I went to Hamilton where my parents and sister because we're looking for houses to buy to give to others to rent.First we went to the Hamilton Gardens. There,my family was feeding some ducks and we also fed some ducklings. Then we went to see some houses. There was a house I really liked because at the back there was a huge space where horse training was held so that was a really cool house for me and Norah. So we kept on looking at houses but Norah kept on saying,"Can we go to the Gardens?"But we didn't go because it was Father's Day.Then we went to Mac Donalds because we were hungry and didn't have food in the car.And we went back home and crashed into bed to sleep.

Jasmine, Neha & Jahnavi - Author's Purpose Learning Story
Learners: Jahnavi, Neha & Jasmine Learning Coach: T.Dillner Date: 3.9.15
|
Learning Area: Literacy - Author’s Purpose
|
Learning Observed
|
Jahnavi, Neha and Jasmine attended a literacy workshop which was aimed at one of the Learning Progressions that each learner has on their Learning Pathway. We were looking specifically at how an author might use features on the cover and spine, in the blurb and in the text. The learners had to work together to analyse a text and identify why the author included these features and what they told the viewer about the text.
Jahnavi, Neha and Jasmine worked as a group on a variety of novels, connecting how the author may have used features that were the same or different on each text. They showed an increased capability in this when talking together about how the cover image, title, blurb and first page gave an idea of the theme and the author’s purpose. As they collaborated, each of the girls were able to extend their own knowledge by building on it with the ideas of the other group members.

Neha's Operation Big Science Learning Story
Learners: Neha, Willie, Helen & Daniel Learning Coach: DWilkes Learning Area: Science Sept: August 2015
|
Learning Observed
|
Neha, Willie, Helen & Daniel had a blast conducting Operation Big Science in Week 7. Thanks to the New World kit of ingredients. Lots of learning resources as well about the Types of Mixtures and Chemical Reactions in Baking. The learners learned that cooking is scientific fun and that the science capabilities are for life. After initially watching a short video explaining the difference between chemical and physical changes the learners were challenged to explore their curiosity by examining their materials and to discuss their priori knowledge about the materials and cooking with them. They had tonic water, water and different kinds of jelly. Then they collaboratively devised an experiment - a cooking experiment, using the ingredients they selected. First they identified a question and then a hypothesis- making connections to their prior knowledge. As a group they needed to plan their method too. During the cooking they made observations- noting what they notice, think and wonder. Neha did well leading the group through their experiment and capturing photo and video evidence of their process. She also developed some capability at measuring while completing their recipe. Their concoction was a mystery- they wanted to see if it would glow in the black light, it didn’t so they left it to set and check the next day. Such a collaboration!
